The Countdown is On!

Wow!  Can you believe we only have 50 days left of 1st grade?  Where has the time gone?  We have so much more to learn and fun to be had as we wrap up the final trimester of the year.  With spring break upon us, I hope everyone has time to rest, relax, and enjoy some time with family during this extended break.  Your child's homework over the break is to simply read for enjoyment!  The students are definitely beginning to love literature and their interests are coming through in their personal book choice.  I hope you have some time to cuddle up and read with your reader!

Meet Bo

Bo is a sports loving guy who happens to go to daycare with my own son!  He is a gem in our classroom and a gem at daycare, always helping the little kiddos.  Bo is always willing to lend a hand, pencil or snack to a friend in need!  We are so lucky to have you in our class!

Meet Tarin

If you haven't met Tarin yet, you are missing out!  Tarin always has a huge grin on his face in our class and we are so glad he has joined our Washington family.  Tarin enjoys playing with his brother, Beyblades and Skylanders.

We celebrated a birthday in 1st grade this week!  Happy Birthday Anabelle!  Thanks for the fun cupcakes!

A Peek at Our Week

Reading: This week we began reading a biography on Tomas Rivera.  The students were so interested in learning about Tomas as a real person that we did our own research on him.  We were able to find pictures of the library named after him in California as well as some real life photographs.  Students will dig deeper into the text next week to practice sequencing events.  We will also continue learning about verb tenses.

Math: In math students are learning about non-standard measurements.  We began by measuring length with various units.  Next we practiced comparing the lengths of 2-3 items.  Next week we will use non-standard measurement to weigh objects using a balance scale.  We continue to work on fact fluency for addition and subtraction facts to 10.  Flashcards would make a great gift for your first grader!

Writing: After seeing a new student visit Washington, we decided to put our opinion writing skills to work.  Students are each working on a paragraph that can be used in a class book titled "Great Places in Fargo" which will be put on display in the main office for new students.  Students are incorporating exciting introductions, opinions, reasons and strong conclusions in their pieces.  Check out the final product next week in the main office!

Science: We wrapped up our study of day and night sky changes this week.  We got to paint "clouds" using fluffy paint this week which was a blast!  Ask your child about the moon surface as well as its relationship to the sun.
