First Day of School

Oh my goodness!  I can't begin to tell you what fun we had today on our first day of 1st grade!  I should also add that my 18, new 1st grade students are amazing.  They are kind, caring, attentive and hard working.  I am so lucky!

Today we began the day with a fun magic play-dough activity.  The students were given a ball of white play-dough.  I then read a poem which explained that the play-dough would magically change into a new color if our year was going to be great.  Well, sure enough, all of the students' play-dough changed into a new color.  Insert sigh of relief from Mrs. Sterling that her project worked!

We read oodles of books and learned more about one another with some team building activities.  One of the books we read was First Grade Jitters where a little boy is very scared to start 1st grade.  He has jitters and butterflies in his tummy until he realizes 1st grade will be fun.  We read a "Jitter Juice" poem and then made our own Jitter Juice to wash away any jitters or butterflies that were in our tummies!  I forgot to grab a photo of the juice, but here is the poem we practiced echo reading. We also practiced counting, graphing and tallies after trying the juice!

In the afternoon it was time for a math game to practice one to one correspondence and basic counting and addition.  We played Back to School Roll and Cover.  Students were paired up and learned all of the rules and routines that go along with playing games in our classroom including sitting inside of a hula-hoop, keeping the dice from leaving the hoop.  In my rookie years of teaching, I had dice flying across the room!
All in all it was an amazing first day of school.  We will continue to learn the rules and routines of 1st grade in the coming weeks.  Tonight, I hope your child comes home with stories to tell as well as excitement to continue.  He or she should return the homework and paperwork (if applicable) in their G.O. Book tomorrow.

Back to School Night

Can you believe it?  A new school year is just around the corner.  As much as I enjoy summer home with my family, I am equally as excited to begin another year of teaching.  Back to School Night at Washington will be held on Tuesday, August 25 from 5:00-6:30.  If possible, please bring your child's school supplies so that I am able to organize and label all items prior to the first day of school.  I require one additional supply, a clipboard, which should be easy to find and inexpensive.  A clipboard gives students the flexibility to work from the carpet or even outside on nice days.  This year the Fargo Public Schools are requiring online registration.  This will help eliminate much of the paperwork for the evening.  I will, however, have a few papers that need to be filled out in the classroom.  Looking forward to meeting you all soon!
